Martin Miller became interested in antiques shortly after leaving school. Searching in vain for a guide to prices he decided to create his own, with his then business partner. The first Lyle Antiques Review, forerunner to the famous Miller’s Antiques Price Guide, was born in 1969.
He has a refreshingly unstuffy attitude to antiques and people. “Privacy is an alien concept to me” he explains. “I’m ultra gregarious. I don’t like being alone and I’m addicted to meeting people.” This explains his love for restoring interesting old properties, stuffing them with ancient objects, and sharing them with friends and guests. These included Chilston Park, the 17th century hotel in Kent, a gothic mansion in Kensington and a Victorian maisonette in Notting Hill.
His latest project is Glencot House, a Victorian mansion built in grand Jacobean style. Nestling beneath the Mendips at Somerset’s Wookey Hole it’s given him a fresh opportunity to enjoy the company of those who think the present is over-rated!
